- [Instructor] If you've ever served in the military, you've heard of protocols. Protocols are firms sets of rules that govern how to do things. In this instance, like address a superior or march in place. There are also less firm social protocols. For example, how to stand in line or to silence your phone in a movie theater. There are protocols for greeting people, too. Sometimes the protocol is to shake hands, and other times, it's to bow. Computers, computer hardware and network transmissions use their own sets of protocols. These are also firm sets of rules and define how computers work and how data travels across a network. There are protocols for hardware, software, email, web surfing, and thousands of other things. Remote access technologies have unique protocols of their own.
