Sign in, shut down, sleep, and restart

- Let's see the basics of signing into your computer and shutting it down when you're finished. Every time you turn on your computer, you will start on a screen like this. Just click this screen to sign into your user account. If you have more than one account set up, you will need to choose the one you want to sign into and your multiple accounts will be listed on the bottom left corner. I only have one user account so we'll sign into that one. But you should look closely at this field to see whether it says pin or password. If you see the password field, then of course you'll need to type in the password for your account to sign in. Every user account has a password, but you might also have a different way to sign in like the pin code or a fingerprint scanner. If it is prompting you for a pin code and you don't know the pin, you could click where it says, "I forgot my pin" and sign in with your full password. But I do have my pin so I'm going to type that in and sign into my account. And now I can get to work with whatever I'm doing today. Later, when you're finished using the computer, you should click on the Start button in the bottom left corner, which opens up the Start Menu, then click on this Power button and you'll get these three options. The Shutdown option turns the computer off completely. Just click that and wait for the computer to power down. Restart will turn the computer off then immediately back on. But before you shut down or restart, you should close all applications and tasks that you have open. But realistically, I rarely shut down my computer. It's really not necessary. Most of the time I use the Sleep option. Sleep basically freezes your computer where you are now, shuts down most of the system, but keeps just enough running so it remembers where you left off. This is what you should do if you know you're going to come back to the computer today or tomorrow. When you put the computer to sleep, the screen will go black. Then the next time you need to use the computer, just click the mouse or hit a key on the keyboard and it'll wake up again and you will need to sign in again for security. If you use the sleep mode, you do not need to close applications or documents. You can just literally pick up where you left off. Now, if you use a laptop, you don't even have to click this sleep button here. You can just close your laptop's lid and the computer will go to sleep. It will use the battery when it's in sleep mode, but very slowly. Then the next time you want to use the computer, you can just open up the laptop lid and it will wake up. Now one other option I want to look at is lock screen. For that you need to click on the Account option here in the Start Menu, and this will probably have your name on it. And then there's this option for Lock. When you click this option, it locks the screen so you would need to put in your password again to continue working. If you have sensitive material on your computer that you need to protect, but you need to step away to grab a cup of coffee or something, you should lock the screen so nobody can sit down and use the computer while you're away. And when you're back, just put in your password or your pin code to sign back in. So now you have a good idea of how to sign into your computer and how to shut it down, or just put it to sleep when you're finished using it.
