- Every now and then you may encounter a file like this. This is a zip file. You see, it ends with .zip and if we look at the file type, it is a compressed zipped folder. This is an archive file that contains several other files. If you download files from the web, a zip file is pretty common. Or if you have several files that you need to send to somebody, often it's easier to zip them all together into one file and then you only have one file to send. Now, since I have a zip file here, let's start by seeing how to open it. All you need to do is double click on it and it opens that zip file. It looks very much like I opened just a normal folder. I'm in the zip file and I can see the contents, but I recommend that you do not try to open and edit any of the files directly inside of the zip file.
