- Memberships and subscriptions are different things, even though sometimes we use those terms interchangeably. In an e-commerce setting, subscriptions mean recurring billing. You're taking money every period, whether that be a week, a month, a year, for some sort of reason. Membership means some sort of special benefits and or access. A membership can also be a subscription, like you paying $100 a year for Amazon Prime. That is both a membership and a subscription, but they aren't always the same thing. If your client is talking about memberships, there are a couple of things to consider. Will customers get exclusive access to products? Will customers get a discount on products? Will customers get some sort of special content and if so, is there some way to limit someone from downloading all the content in one day and then canceling their membership?
