Contrasting beginnings and endings
- The contrast between the beginning and the end of a film often tells a powerful story on its own. Often this is literally the opening frame and the final frame. The power of this convention is that it really helps drive home the distance that we've traveled through the film. The opening shot of the Wizard of Oz shows Dorothy running home from Ms. Gulch's house. And when she gets there, her family kind of ignores her. The end shows Dorothy after symbolically getting away from the witch and running home, kinda like she did in the beginning of the film, but now her family is extremely interested in her. In the beginning of the film, she wanted to go somewhere over the rainbow, really far away. But the end of the film, she says: - I'm not going to leave here ever, ever again! Because I love you all. Oh, Auntie Em. There's no place like home. - Returning to the sepia tone reminds us of the beginning and the feelings that Dorothy felt then. And that mirror image of the beginning and the…
