- Obviously, we can't cover everything about writing in this series, there's so much more to learn and there are some phenomenal resources out there. So I wanted to take this tutorial and share with you some of my personal favorite places to study screenwriting. Let's start with books. I love the Save The Cat series by Blake Snyder. This is a common staple in Hollywood, but a lot of the indie filmmakers I know in Seattle despise this book. Save The Cat attempts to fit all successful stories and films in just a handful of common types. This book also details a list of story beats that he suggests all stories should follow. A lot of people dismiss the book as formulaic, but personally, I love it. It's cheap, it's short, it's really funny, it's full of interesting ideas, and the author was actually a working screenwriter that sold scripts to Hollywood, so he knew what he was talking about.
