- So, you've created the perfect budget. You've budgeted for production, post-production, for the screening, and for marketing the film after the film is done. But that's not all. You still should set aside a bit in the budget for unplanned expenses. On every film I have ever worked on, there is something that pops up at the last second that no one saw coming that costs extra money. If you don't have funds allocated for unexpected expenses, then the money that you use on those unexpected expenses will undoubtedly come from either the post-production budget or the marketing budget. And that will be a decision that you will regret. We set aside tons of extra money on The Assurance, and I was so glad that we did. The initial budget I had to work with was $6500 for production costs. Yet, with my previous short films, like Empathy for the Devil and Godlizza, the budget was negligible, maybe a few hundred dollars. So, to me, $6500 felt like a small fortune.
