- Another backwards thing I did in pre-production was to start post-production, especially with the visual effects. Actually, this isn't that unusual. Visual effects can take a very long time, And while it's not a good idea to finish entire effects shots until the film is edited, it could really help to get a head start. For example, I knew that this demon would need to be modeled and textured. There's no reason to wait on that until we're done filming, so I hired a 3D artist to start work on the demon as soon as I could. Then when I was ready to do the compositing, the model of the demon was ready for me to use. And actually, our original 3D artist David Heumann had a huge family tragedy, so I ended up needing to give the project to Shaun McNeely to finish. Had I waited until post-production to start the model of the demon, this would have caused a painful delay in our schedule. But since I started early, we didn't take that much of a hit at all.
