- [Instructor] Let's talk a little bit about SSL certificates. This encryption is key if you accept any kinds of information from your users through your website. This used to apply mainly for personal, private, or sensitive information, like credit cards or addresses, but these days, an SSL certificate is pretty compulsory. They're so low cost and easy to install and Google prefers that sites have them. Most hosting providers will install one for you, sometimes even for free. The SSL certificate is a piece of code that you install on your web server. It creates encryption on all the files that make up your website so that when those files are sent from the server to your browser, the browser and your server have to do sort of a secret handshake in order to confirm that all of the data is encrypted.
