- [Narrator] Materials and Resources credit category focuses on minimizing the impact of building materials on the environment, through their whole life cycle, including extraction, processing, transportation, and disposal. There are a few key terms that you need to understand before getting into the details of how project teams can meet LEED prerequisites and credits in this category. The first term is embodied energy. Embodied energy is the sum of all energy required to produce any goods or services, including harvesting, processing, and transportation. Think about a product next to you, like a pen, or a piece of paper, or even the chair you are sitting in. Can you think of the activities that consumed energy to make this product happen, and to be delivered to you? Embodied energy applies to, not only materials, but also other resources.
