Understanding annual cost of ownership
- [Instructor] In recent years, there's been a trend in the WordPress ecosystem to move to annual licensing for products. For example, instead of paying a one-time fee of $50 for a theme or plugin like you might have in the past, now you're billed annually in order to maintain an active license. On the whole, this is a smart move, maintaining a lifetime of updates and support for a product based on a one-time purchase fee isn't a very sustainable business model. That said, when you go to buy a license for a membership plugin and any related ad-ons just keep in mind that those will likely be annually recurring costs. Part of running a website means factoring in not only the initial development costs, but also any ongoing operational costs such as web hosting, maintenance and product licenses. If you're creating a membership site for clients, let them know upfront so that they can budget for those ongoing costs in the future.
