- [Instructor] Did you know that landfills are the third largest source of methane in the U.S.? Decomposing waste in landfills produce landfill gas, which is a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide. Methane is a greenhouse gas that's almost 30 times more potent than carbon dioxide. The LEED rating system requires all new construction and major renovation projects pursuing a LEED certification to create a waste management plan that outlines what kind of and how much waste is expected on the project and how it will be managed. Project teams can also add up points by pursuing the LEED credit that sets thresholds for an overall diversion percentage and requires a minimum number of diverted material streams. There are four major ways of managing waste, source reduction, reuse, recycling, and waste to energy. Source reduction is the most effective construction waste management solution.
