- [Instructor] In the U.S., water consumption by buildings account for 13.6% of potable water use. Building operations that use potable water include toilet flushing, sinks and showers, air conditioning, and irrigating landscapes. Potable water is defined as water that meets or exceeds U.S. Environmental Protection Agency drinking water quality standards (or a local equivalent outside the U.S.), and is approved for human consumption by the state or local authorities having jurisdiction. It may be supplied from wells or municipal water systems. The average residential water use for each person in the United States is about 50 gallons a day. If all they need to drink is half a gallon, using drinkable water for the remaining 48 gallons results in wasted energy used to treat water to drinking water standards.
