- [Instructor] What can be measured can be managed. There's a direct correlation between monitoring any kind of use and achieving efficiencies. Water efficiency category has a prerequisite that requires a permanent main water meter to measure the total quantity of water entering the building. By requiring building-level metering of potable water use, the USGBC's goal is to collect and analyze performance data to help future project teams find the most effective solutions. The prerequisite requirement for building-level metering is usually met by a utility meter. But in some cases, such as a campus setting, there may be one utility bill for an entire campus of multiple buildings. An example to this could be a college campus that pays the water bill for the whole campus. If a project is pursuing LEED certification, a building-level water metering must be implemented regardless of the utility arrangement.
