What is a child theme?

- [Instructor] We talked about WordPress being the engine powering your site, and Genesis being the framework around it. So to stick with that automotive example, you can think of a child theme as the paint job. A child theme is a layer of code that runs on top of the Genesis framework and inherits all of its functionality. And it mainly controls the visual elements of your site. For example, here's a WordPress site and I've got the Genesis framework installed and it's the active theme. If we go and look at the front end of the site, you'll notice that there are zero styles applied. And that's because Genesis is not intended to run as an active theme. If I go back and activate a child theme, in this case the Genesis Sample. And I'm going to skip this theme setup for now.
