What are custom taxonomies?

- [Instructor] Here we're going to take a look at custom taxonomies. So, it's important to understand what a taxonomy is. The definition of a taxonomy is a scheme of classification. Basically, this means that a taxonomy is a way to organize data, which allows you to relate one item to other similar items in a hierarchical or non-hierarchical group. To give you a real-life example, we can take a look at one of my favorite websites, Pen Chalet. It's got different types of products in the top navigation: fine pens, inks, accessories, and more. These are akin to a product taxonomy but if we dig deeper and look at, say, fine pens there are different types of fine pens, a further taxonomy or classification. And if we click on fountain pens we'll see even more taxonomies for brand, type, price, and other ways that we can classify and organize these fountain pens. In WordPress, we have two default taxonomies that we can use all the time. The first is categories, which are mandatory for posts.…
