The benefits of subtitles and closed captions

(upbeat music) - Subtitles and closed captions are text that display below your video that translate or transcribe the dialogue or narrative. While they may seem similar, there are is in fact a large difference between the two. Subtitles assume the viewer can hear audio cues such as a knock as a door, (knocking on door) a ringing phone, (telephone ringing) or an important musical stinger. (dramatic woosh) Close captions on the other hand assume the viewer cannot hear those audio cues and transcribe these along with the dialogue. Not only can these make your videos more accessible to the hard of hearing, they can also boost your views by helping you place better in search. As I said before, YouTube is a giant search engine, so why not give that search engine more metadata. Subtitles and closed captions give the algorithm more keywords to go off of, so YouTube can better serve you up to viewers who are searching for related topics.
