Making cloth with primitives

- All right, now we're moving on to the second article of clothing. And we'll be using a whole new technique to create it. Since the skirt is a much more freeform shape that only conforms to the body in a few places, I'm going to use a more manual approach in constructing it. This technique should give you a lot of freedom to make new organic shapes. Okay, I've got my exercise file loaded. What I want to do is go into the Sub Tool Palette and click Append, and let's append a new Cylinder 3D. All right, we've got a new cylinder in our scene. Let's go and let's make sure we've got it selected in our Sub Tool Palette. One thing I want to do is turn off Perspective. This means that we can have a perfectly straight front on view, if I hold down Shift it should lock into a perfect front view. And this way I can make selections to the cylinder perfectly without any weird jagged edges happening. So what I want to do is select just the middle part of it, because I don't want the top and bottom capped, I want it to be a hollow open tube. So what I'm going to do is hold down Control and Shift and just select the middle of it. Okay, so you can see we've hidden the top and bottom of the cylinder. Now let's go into Geometry. Modify Topology. And Del Hidden. That's going to delete anything that's hidden. Okay, so now what we can do is start forming this into our skirt. Let's look at this from a perfect front view again. Hold down Shift as you rotate. That should snap into place. Now let's get the Tranpose tools out. I'm going to get Move here. I'm just going to click and drag out manipulator and I'm going to click and drag in this middle white circle. And let's get this roughly in place over her hips. And let's also lengthen this. So I'm going to drag upwards and hold down Shift, so it goes straight up. And what I want to do is have this pointing downwards. And now what I can do is hold down Shift, click and drag in the end. And we can stretch this out. All right, let's look at this from a side view, I'm just going to rotate around and hold down Shift until it snaps. And what I want to do is kind of shrink this, front to back. So let's drag out a new manipulator, hold down Shift, see how it snaps in a straight line. And then I'm going to hold down Shift again and click and drag on the red circle on the end of the manipulator. I'll just squeeze this in since the dress is going to be less deep from front to back. It doesn't have to be perfect. All right, so it's still pretty rough but we're getting there. And actually, what I want to do is bring this in so it's more wrapping around her waist. So I'm going to click on this red line here so that the manipulator sticks out straight this way. And still in Move Mode I'm going to hold down Shift, click and drag on the red end of that manipulator so it comes up to her waist, roughly. It doesn't have to be perfect. Okay, so let's get this pushed into place. What I'm going to do is go back to Draw Mode, and let's get the Move Tool, B, M, V. And what I want to do is pull out one side of this cylinder so it kind of goes up and over one leg. But I don't want to affect the other side, the right side, or our right side, screen right side, so much. So let's mask it off, I'm going to hold down Control and let's just click and drag, bring out a mask over half of this. Okay, so now we're only affecting this side. But I want a softer transition. So let's go into our Masking Menu. And I'm just going to blur the mask. Let's go ahead and blur it one more time. So with the Move Brush, what I want to do is get a bigger Draw Size so we can really grab this whole thing. And I'm just going to drag it and stretch it and pull it up and over this leg. All right, let's look at it from another view. I'm just going to rotate it around a little bit. And just try to fit this very roughly to the leg. One thing you can do is turn on Transparency so you can kind of see where that leg is underneath the body. So let's zoom in a little closer here and just try to pull this a little closer to the body. It doesn't have to be perfect, just really roughly in place. Okay, now that that's kind of roughly in place we can look at it from this side. Okay, it looks pretty good. So I want to continue adjusting this around the whole part of the body. So let's get rid of the mask. Control Shift A. And now we can kind of push around the rest of this so it more closely fits the legs and the body. It doesn't have to be perfect, just very rough at this point. I'm going to zoom in here closer and I'm going to shrink my Draw Size here just holding down Spacebar instead of going up to the top menu. Just a way I like to do it sometimes. And I just want to pull this in around her waist a little bit more closely. Try and keep it a little bit more natural. Let's look at it from this front view here. Let me try to pull this up closer to the waist here. And I just want to try to get this fitting the body a little bit more closely. All right. Good enough for a start. All right, what we have here is a very rough start on the skirt, but it didn't take too long to do. It's something to get us started. This approach to making cloth comes in handy when there's not a lot of places where a tight fit is crucial. It allows you freedom to push and pull fabric in any direction you want.
