Understanding the limits of a photo reference

- While ideally you would want to have the person you are sculpting sit right next to you as you sculpt, this is rarely possible and not very practical. For this reason we'll be relying on photographic reference. In this video, I'll be covering some of the things to keep in mind as you gather and use photos. The main concept to keep in mind is that photos are there to help you see the proportions, forms, and details of your subject matter. They aren't a strict blueprint that must be followed exactly. There are a lot of subtle ways in which photos can trick you or distort reality. If you try to sculpt a photograph with machine-like perfection, you'll end up frustrated and having wasted a lot of time. Experienced portrait artists understand that photos must be interpreted and filtered through our knowledge of anatomy, likeness, and a sense of artistic appeal.
