What is kitbashing?
- [Instructor] So, before we start with the more practical side of things, we need to understand what is this kitbashing technique and why it's relevant for what we want to achieve. The process of kitbashing is not unique to 3D software. In fact, the concept has been around for a long time. It was popularized in the visual effects industry with movies like the Star Wars: Episode IV - The New Hope with the creations of many of the spaceships. In a nutshell, the kitbashing technique consists of taking one or more pre-made commercial kits and combining different parts to create something new. This technique allows you to build new concepts very quickly since you can reuse details from pre-build assets and other shapes to dictate the look of our new design. Here's an example I created relatively quickly using a set of custom and pre-made 3D objects. If you're interested in creating a futuristic sci-fi vehicle, for instance, like the one that I have here, you'll probably need a few different kits: one from where you can source things like the tires and the headlamps, but maybe you might want to add also some artillery to the cart, so we'll also need a gun or a military kit just to extract those parts. So, in this course, we'll create a series of assets for organic and hard-surface modeling that will serve us as a starting point to design our own concepts in a speedy.
