- While your camera does a great job of capturing high-quality visuals, audio isn't really its thing. After all, most of these cameras just have small microphones built right into the camera body and it's really far away from your subject. Plus if you're holding the camera, you tend to actually get your hands right next to the microphone leading to lots of noise. Fortunately, the cameras have external ports that allow you to connect accessories. So it's very easy to connect a microphone. For example, I could take something like this. This is referred to typically as a shotgun microphone and it's great for recording audio from a further distance. So if I was recording things that were more background sounds or B-roll but I wanted to have some good audio to go with it, I could just slip that right into the hot shoe, it slides into place and tightens down.
