- Efficiency tends to deal with things. Effectiveness tends to deal with people. We manage things. We lead people. This quote describes exactly how we want to approach handling employee problems. We want the administrative part to be efficient and the outcomes of being a coach and an advisor to be effective. And that's why we need big picture preparation. And here are two key areas when doing so. First, I recommend you have a comprehensive checklist that can be used prior to each meeting, listing all materials and documents that need to be compiled. The checklist not only promotes thoroughness, consistency and efficiency within the department, it can also be used for any follow-up activity after a meeting. Besides your internal documents and information collected or created during the investigation, additionally include this question on your checklist: Should anyone else be included in this meeting?
