- I've been teaching photography for a long time, and without a doubt, the questions I get asked the most are usually related to buying decisions. Someone wants help picking out a new camera, or a strobe, or a tripod, or whatever. On the one hand, the web makes shopping much easier because of convenience, but the massive proliferation of reviews and opinions about every product in the world means it's easy to find yourself flummoxed by analysis paralysis, as you compare features and weigh different people's opinions. While I can't give you a foolproof method for choosing a piece of gear, I would like to offer one piece of advice to consider. When you get started shopping for any type of gear, or anything at all, I suppose, your first decision should be to choose a maximum amount that you're willing to pay. If money is no object to you, then I'm afraid this piece of advice won't work, but that's just something you have to suffer for being fabulously wealthy. For the rest of us…
