- I have a friend who's spent a lot of time with the great jazz pianist Herbie Hancock, and one time Herbie told a story to my friend, and I'm going to tell it to you now. I want to say that I'm paraphrasing like crazy, but I think the gist of the story is still there. So Herbie Hancock was on tour with Miles Davis one time, and they got to the venue where they were going to play, and Herbie checked out the piano and found that the piano was unusable, just a disaster. And I don't mean just out of tune, but like Old West saloon kind of piano. And so with half an hour before the show was supposed to start, he went to Miles and said, "Miles, you guys are just going to have to be a trio tonight 'cause the piano isn't working." And Miles' response was, "No, you've got to figure out how to make it work."
