Development stages of a photographer

- Something I've learned from years of teaching is that all photographers go through stages in the development of their skill. It's very interesting to watch new students, because I usually see much that is familiar to my own experience learning photography. For example, there's a point where all budding photographers suddenly recognize texture and how different kinds of light bring out different degrees of texture. So you'll see them go through lots of texture studies. At another time their eyes might wake up to line or form. These different stages don't always produce great original work, but they're a necessary part of a photographer's development, so it's always important to let someone work through these explorations.
