- Let's start by looking at what we call engineering controls. Engineering controls are steps that we can take to physically alter the environment around us to make it safer. Now I've already said that direct sun exposure with no shade will increase the risk of heat related illnesses. Working outside where you're exposed to direct sunlight actually exposes you to the heat that's measured by the outside temperature plus that direct sunlight is an additional source of radiant heat. Sometimes we see weather reports that publish a number that they call the heat index and it's important to understand that the heat index number that you'll typically see in these news and weather reports does not take into account this additional radiant heat from direct sunlight. Doing physically demanding work in the hot sun with no shade around what I'll refer to as the heat stress index can actually be as much as 15 degrees higher than…
