Evaluating a wide-angle lens

- When you're shopping for a new lens, you're going to face a lot of potentially confusing specifications and information. This week on The Practicing Photographer, I'm going to go over a few of the terms and specs you might run into when you're shopping for a wide angle lens. A normal lens is one that has the same field of view as the human eye. On a camera with a sensor that's the size of a piece of 35 millimeter film, a normal lens is 50 millimeters. In general, any lens that offers a field of view that's wider than a normal lens is considered a wide angle lens. However, the wide angle category can be further divided into sub categories. The range from 28 to 35 millimeters, in 35 millimeter equivalents, is the most traditional wide angle range. A little bit wider from that would be the 17 to 28 millimeter range.
