- [Instructor] The defining characteristic of engineering drawings is the dimensions. Combined with their associated tolerances, dimensions convey the vast majority of design requirements for mechanical parts. In this video we'll outline the fundamental rules for dimensions, as well as some basic assumptions that you can rely on to simplify mechanical drawings. As we've mentioned throughout this course an engineering drawing must have a single, unambiguous meaning so that it is interpreted by everyone in exactly the same way. In order to satisfy this requirement there are two fundamental rules for dimensioning on all mechanical drawings. First, the size and location of every feature on the part must be fully defined. Second, you cannot have any extra or redundant dimensions besides the minimum required to fully define every feature on the part.
