- Finding the right cadence for conducting both evaluation and foundational research can be tricky and will really depend on your specific team and circumstances. Foundational research is often thought of as coming first or early on in a process to set the stage. And while I absolutely agree that you ought to conduct foundational research early, I also recommend regularly conducting this kind of research to understand the changing contexts and needs of your users. Doing foundational research regularly unlocks the real power, which is to uncover new opportunities to fill a gap that has recently emerged. I want you to pause and think about your mobile phone. What does it look like? What is it capable of? Are you using the same process to connect to people that you were five years ago? One year ago? I doubt it.
