- If you have the opportunity, I really recommend that you go where your users are to have those conversations and observe them in their usual context. Anytime you go out in the field, which is also called ethnographic research, it gives you an opportunity to uncover even more areas you may not have thought to ask about and dig into areas where what people say and what they do does not align. Traditional ethnography work includes a researcher living and fully immersing into the environment they're examining, but even spending an hour or two at someone's home or place of work can be enlightening. You may even start with the same basic goals of an interview, but you get such a better opportunity to see the real context that a person is working in. When you observe people in context, pay special attention to things like workarounds or shortcuts they use, where they get interrupted, inconsistencies in what they've said to you…
