- Overall, GitHub can be characterized as a graphical user interface or GUI for using Git source control as well as a social platform for collaborating on projects. However, additional GUIs for using Git source control on your local machine can be a great addition to GitHub. In this lesson, you will learn about how using a GUI for version control can complement the functionality provided by GitHub. And I will introduce you to a few examples of these commonly used applications. Using a GUI for version control on your local machine will help you keep track of the files you've changed in your local repository before you push them up to the remote repository on GitHub's servers.
