Look at existing data
- We often think that we need to get started with foundational research completely from scratch, but it's likely that there's already a lot of existing data that you could dig into. Most organizations have at least some basic analytics data, like where people are dropping off in a signup process or how long people are spending on particular pages. Looking at the data might help you spot trends or open questions to explore. For instance, if potential users are spending a long time on the pricing page, what does that mean? Looking at this data may not lead you to conclusions, but it can serve as a good starting point to orient your work and open questions. You might also have things like support tickets or social media logs that you could begin reviewing to give you a sense for extreme reactions or emotions to explore. For example, if people have similar complaints or requests frequently, you could dig into why these topics…
