- [Instructor] Let's go ahead and talk about mold and the type of molds that we have here in composites. There's two basic types. There's and open mold and a closed mold. The open mold is a mold that's open to the atmospheric pressures of the area. So, it's open to the atmosphere. The pressure that's being applied is done by the act of laying up the part and pressing it against the mold. And the atmospheric pressure of the room, the space that you're in. A closed mold is closed to the atmosphere. And the pressure is applied mechanically. So, whatever process you're using is applying the pressure to the mold and pressurizing the system. So first up, let's talk about open mold and the pros for open mold. The biggest pro for open mold system is low cost. And we're not only talking about cost for the actual manufacturing of the mold.
