- [Instructor] Now let's go ahead and talk about molding, and how we use molding here in composites. First up is, what is a mold? And in this course, we're going to be talking about mold in references to composites. So for us, this is an idea of taking a composite material in matrix, and forming it into the desired shape that we design, and that's the point of the mold. Now, the mold itself allows us to create identical and consistent parts repetitively. So we can just create part after part after part that's consistently the same. Now, these molds can be made from a multitude of different materials. So, most production molds are typically made out of aluminum or metals, and that's probably the most common. Now, composite molds are becoming more and more popular over time. And, we talked about earlier, it is about rates of thermal expansion.
