- When I returned back to work, my vice president acknowledged Steve's death and the grief I was feeling straight on. She got it. She talked to me about Steve and how she had met him at the holiday party. She shared with me some of the things they talked about and that she wished she could talk to him more. It made me feel seen and heard and I loved being able to talk about him. But I was one of the lucky ones. Everyone should have that experience and unfortunately, they don't. I hear from a lot of grieving people that their managers want them to go back to work right away to make their numbers. Or others who are threatened that they won't have a job if they don't come back quickly. Or even HR folks saying that they want them to come back as quickly as possible, otherwise it may set a bad precedent.
