- You can't look at somebody and know that their heart is broken. I can't look at you and know whether you're grieving or not. And so as a result, we have to tap into some of the emotions that a grieving employee may be experiencing. The most common emotion is sadness. We think grief, we think sadness. And yet this is in a culture that isn't necessarily comfortable with sadness. It can be very isolating to feel sad. But it makes sense, right? You love someone, they die, you're sad. You love a job, it leaves, you're sad. There are other emotions that run under the radar with grief that I want to make sure to mention. Anxiety is a huge part of grief. So anxiety is the fear of our future, right? We feel like we have this perceived control of the future that we want. When my husband died, everything about my future changed.
