- [Instructor] Now that you know how to express tolerance limits on a drawing, let's talk about how to set these values. In this video, we'll summarize some of the different ways mechanical tolerances can be calculated based on a features function, but first, let's discuss why unnecessarily tight tolerances can create big problems in manufacturing. As the tolerance for a feature becomes tighter, the cost to manufacture grows dramatically. If multiple features on the part are over-toleranced, you can easily double or triple the manufacturing cost without realizing it and most of the time, tighter than necessary tolerances don't result in any additional performance or value. For these reasons, engineers should always specify the widest tolerance that still allows the product to assemble and function correctly.
