- [Instructor] Every show has a star, and the star in your data visualizations are the data, not the supporting characters. But every show relies on its supporting characters and so too are they critical to a successful visualization of your data. When I'm teaching beginners to data visualization about axes and labels and legends, I focus on reminding them to include them. I talk about how important it is to channel the novice to provide enough information to guide the audience to what's important in the data. I often reference the Zen Buddhist practice of finding your beginner's mind. Remember what it was like to not know anything, so you know what guideposts to provide your audience to help them navigate the data. But when speaking to data analysts, the opposite is usually the concern. They fall in love with their data. They feel that every bit of data is incredibly important.
