Understanding the SVG file format

- [Instructor] When you're working in Inkscape, you're using a file format called SVG, or scalable vector graphics. So to better understand what you can do with Inkscape, let's take a minute to go over what SVG is, and how it works. First, SVG is an open file format for creating 2D graphics, developed by the World Wide Web Consortium, or W3C, the organization that sets web standards. No one company controls SVG, and all the details about how it works are free and available to the public. This is why it was chosen as the format for Inkscape images, having an open file format helps Inkscape itself remain free and open. For this same reason, SVG is also used by other open source software, like Scribus, LibreOffice, Blender, and GIMP, so you can be sure that the artwork you make with Inkscape will work with those applications too.
