- Years ago I read a really interesting travel memoir by a guy named Jeff Greenwald called "Shopping for Buddhas." In the book, Greenwald finds himself in Nepal. I don't remember how he gets there, it's been years since I've read the book, and he gets interested in buying a statue of Buddha, but he decides he's going to buy the best statue of Buddha. And so, in the process of trying to find that best statue of Buddha, he comes to learn a lot about the art world in Nepal. And so, he comes to know who has the reputation for particularly good statues of Buddha and who doesn't, and so on and so forth. And there comes a point near the end of the book where he's talking to an art dealer and he says, "You know, I'm seeing all these people carving these statues "and I'm wondering where's the young avant garde?
