Welcome

- Welcome. I'm Scott Pagano, and in this course, we're going to look at how to use particle systems in Houdini. Particles are one of Houdini's real strengths, and we've designed four different projects to be able to see how we can use particles in Houdini for four different kinds of effects. - We're going to start off learning how to use sprites and particles together to create some emission off a moving object and then render those with particle sprites to do a great, kind of, smokey particle effect, then we're going to move on and see how we can create geometric trails streaming off an object. This is something that we've seen in all sorts of different ways in film and TV, and it's a really great technique to know how to do, then to be able to adapt for your own projects. Then we're going to move on to learning how to create particles off of a dynamic simulation. We've provided a dynamic simulation for you that will be cached out, so we have an object crashing into something, and then we're going to see how we can use particles to emit from the different points so we can extract from that. And then, finally, we have a chapter where we're going to look at particles in Houdini's geometry instancing together to leverage the power of these two different worlds to be able to create some really interesting motion with particle systems but then be able to instance geometry onto those particles, which is an incredibly efficient way to populate a lot of geometry in a scene. - This is a real fun playground in Houdini to experiment with, and the possibilities are really endless to design really interesting, organic simulations, so let's dive in and start learning about how to use particles in Houdini.
