What is a LUT?

- LUTs, or better yet Look Up Tables, have become quite popular. They allow editors and colorists to store information that can be easily transferred between applications. For example, you could be editing in Premiere Pro and work with a DaVinci Resolve colorist, and still exchange information about color, thanks to Look Up Tables. Look Up Tables are fairly universal, and there's a lot that they can do. They allow you to encapsulate information about cameras, film stocks, or creativity. Let's take a quick look. In this case here, I've got three shots, and it's the exact same footage, but it has had three different Look Up Tables burned in. The middle shot is the film native, as captured on the Blackmagic camera, and in this case it's LOG and fairly washed out. If we look at the scopes, you'll notice that the black point is really hovering sort of around 10 there, and the brightest whites are prevented from clipping, and…
