- Here in the US when we meet someone new one of the first questions that usually gets asked is, what do you do? If you live outside of the US maybe this also happens where you live, but I know from experience that there are many countries where your job is not the single most important factor that defines you. Because so much of our identity is wrapped up in how we label ourselves in terms of work, I think there are a lot of people who wonder if they can really call themselves a photographer, because it's not their job, they hesitate to use that label. What does it matter? You might ask. In the grander scheme of things, it doesn't, but I think that for some people if they don't really feel identifiable as a photographer then they hobble themselves in terms of commitment.
