- Ever been to the principal's office? If not, lucky you. For the rest of you, you may be experiencing flashbacks. Personally, I've never been, but I have walked into a waiting room with a row of students nervously anticipating their turn. That fearful atmosphere is what many employees experience for a disciplinary event. And it's not the kind of atmosphere we want to promote as HR business partners. What we really want is to set the stage for productive, respectful adult conversation that leads to a better outcome beyond exercising discipline. So think back to my principal's office example.
