Working with prime lenses

- I'm a big fan of prime lenses, but I want to make sure you understand what is a prime lens. Let's start with a more traditional lens. You'll notice in this case this a traditional zoom. This one covers 24 to 105. So as we turn the ring here, the lens may actually change shapes. Some professional zoom lenses are fixed in length and they don't telescope like this, but it's very common for the lens to actually physically change shape and that the different lens elements are spaced differently. This is great and it works really well, but what it means is that the aperture tends to either vary as you make adjustments or it's not going to be quite as wide open as a traditional prime lens. A real prime lens only has one focal length. This one you see here is a 35 millimeter. As such, it tends to give better performance and focuses faster and allows in more light.
