- Hi, I'm Garrick Chow and welcome to Monday Productivity Pointers. Spam and other junk email continues to be a nuisance these days and although the filters of many email services continue to get better at preventing junk mail from reaching your inbox, you probably find that a lot of it still gets through. So today, I want to address a particular technique that spammers use to confirm that your email address is active. When spammers send their mass emails, they don't really know how many of the addresses are legitimate. So many of them use a technique where they include a small image, sometimes only a pixel in size, that's hosted on their own servers. When the email is opened on your end, you load the image from their servers, which confirms that this is a active email account and which means you'll probably end up getting your email address added to even more spam mailing lists.
