Set up the People albums

- [Narrator] In terms of organizing your photos, one of the more useful albums generated by iOS 14 is people, which uses face recognition to group images of specific people together in their own albums. When you first upgrade to a version of iOS that supports face recognition, which is anything beyond iOS 10, the photos app will begin a methodical scan of all of the images on your device, using content and facial recognition to inventory your images. Now, depending on how many photos you have on your phone, this could take some time. Because it's a processor intensive operation, this scanning of your images is done when the phone is locked and connected to a power source. The initial scan can take quite a while, even as long as a day or so, especially if you have a lot of images on your device. Once the initial scan is complete, new photos that you take are scanned and categorized very quickly. Once the photos app starts to identify common faces, a people album will appear in the albums view. Tap on an album to view the photos for a particular person. I'll tap on my own album. The banner at the top will auto play a slideshow of images. You can tap on this to see it full screen and with a music soundtrack. We'll cover how to change the titles and music in these slideshows a bit later in this chapter. The photos initially appear in a summary view. If I tap show more, I can see a lot of additional photos and I can see that there are also a lot of similar poses that are not displayed in the summary view. I'll go back to the summary. If you tap on the ellipsis button in the upper right, there are additional choices and actions related to the selected album. I'll tap on the confirm additional photos choice to see if there are any potential images for review, where the photos app is not sure if it's a photo of me. And, in this case, there or not, so I'll tap done and I'll tap the back button to return to the main view of the people albums. If one of the people albums does not have a name associated with it, such as my red-haired mannequin friend Zoe down at the bottom, tap on it to open it up and then tap add name at the top of the screen. Zoe's name. and then I'll tap done down to the bottom and next in the upper right and it confirms that the album has now been renamed. I'll tap done and then I'll tap the back button. You can also change the image that appears as the cover of a people album. To do this, go into an album where you want to make that change. I'll go back into my own album because I know that there's a more recent photo that I want to use. Find the image you want to make as the cover and then do a long or a hard press on it to open up the 3D touch peak view and there's an option in the menu to make key photo. So I'll choose that and I'll tap the back button and now I can see that I have that more recent image as the cover of my album. Within the list of people albums, you can specify the favorites that appear at the top of the list and with larger thumbnails than the other albums. To do this, just tap the heart outline button and this will add that person's album up to the top part of the screen. I'll do that with my own album. When you open up a person's album, you can also tap the ellipsis button in the top right and then there's a choice to add that person to the favorites. I'll tap add Einar to favorites and then I'll tap the back button and now, I can see that he appears up in the top section of the screen. In the main people albums view, you can also tap select in the upper right and then just tap on the albums that you want to make favorites and then tap favorite at the bottom of the screen. In this case, I'm just going to cancel that. Once a person is added to favorites, you can use all of these various options to un-favorite them, as well. You can also customize the order of the people albums. If you have an iPhone with 3D touch, which is the 6S or later, hard press on a thumbnail and then, when it lifts up, drag it into the position where you want to move it. On an older iPhone without 3D touch, press and hold until the thumbnail moves and then drag to reorder it. There's a lot more to explore in the people albums and we'll continue working with this feature in the next movie.
