How is exposure different on a smartphone?

- If you've already got photography experience with a dedicated camera, then coming to a smartphone can be disorienting, partly because you simply don't have the controls that you're used to. Out of the box, a smartphone is really just a point-and-shoot camera. As we'll see, there are ways of taking a smartphone beyond just simple point-and-shoot photography, but even if you give yourself some more manual controls, there's still some fundamental differences when it comes to shooting with a smartphone camera, mostly because of aperture. If you're used to manipulating depth of field to achieve different effects, say blurring out backgrounds, or working hard to ensure sharp focus through the entire depth of your image, then a smartphone camera is going to feel limiting.
