- Together, the shutter speed, aperture, and ISO settings that you choose for a given shot determine how bright the resulting image will be, whether moving objects are sharp or blurry, and how much depth of field the scene will have. These three parameters are interrelated. If I speed up the shutter speed to try to freeze a fast-moving object, the image will get darker. On a normal camera, I could open the aperture to brighten the image, but doing that will reduce the depth of field in my scene. To keep from opening the aperture too far and rendering too much of my scene out of focus, I can increase the ISO to make the sensor more sensitive. But when I do that, I'll risk seeing noise in my final image, especially in the darker shadows. Calculating exposure settings is a balancing act.
