- When you choose to shoot a portrait with a normal camera, a real camera. I feel bad about saying that, I mean, this is a real camera. It's a real good camera, but you know what I mean, a dedicated camera. When you choose to shoot a portrait with that kind of camera, there are usually a couple of decisions you make about your gear. The first is you choose a particular kind of lens, and the second is you make an aesthetic decision to try to blur out the background some by using a wider aperture. And the reason for that is that a blurrier background brings more attention to your subject. As I mentioned before, because of the small sensor on a typical phone camera, you can't get shallow depth of field.
